Hilario Gutierrez

A little over twenty years ago, Hilario Gutierrez had an epiphany in Monument Valley, Arizona that changed his life. This epiphany instantly led him to become an artist after thirty five years as a hairstylist and master colorist. Before his life as an artist, Gutierrez attended Phoenix College studying fine art photography. Gutierrez's unique abstract art was created mostly by acrylic paint. After going to school for art, he then went to a beauty school and in 1977 received a cosmetology license. When asked to describe the style of art he creates, Gutierrez said "Organic and chaotic, with a hint of calm that vibrates to a natural rhythm."

What are some of your favorite hobbies aside from art?

Enjoying a fine Spanish wine. Taking a hike through the gorgeous Sonoran Desert outside my house.

What are two ways to use a pencil other than drawing or writing?

They make great chopsticks. Scratching behind my ears.

Where do you get your inspiration for art?

The topography of the Sonoran desert and the VOICES in my head are my primary inspirations.

What is your favorite piece you've created so far?

The next one coming up that is already in my head.

If you had the opportunity to relive the last 10 years of your life, what is one thing you would you do different?

Make sure I asked for more money for my art.

What art pieces (if any) do you have on your walls?

Whatever is hanging on my walls is there because my wife claimed it. I have no sense of ownership for any of my work. For me, my art is a process so when I am done with a work, it is on to the next one.

What is one thing about you that most people don't know?

Really!! You want me arrested. Again?....(lol)

How do you know when a piece you're working on is done?

That childlike voice in my heart says "look, there's no more paint needed".
"Chaos is perfection undiscovered."

Is there a style of art you are interested in trying?

Yes and no. What I mean is that the gifted talent moving through me has yet to reach its peak.

How do you hope to improve your art?

My art cannot be improved upon. It can only be different, indifferent, or evolve from where it is at that time.

If you were a new addition to the crayon box, what would your color name be and why?

Payne's Gray Level 5....I'm right in the middle and all the "cool" colors would know what to do with me and all the "warm" colors would fear me because I could bring them down.

What is your biggest advice for aspiring and uprising artists?

Develop your social skills, understand that "people" buy your work and it's ok to be in tune to how they are moved by your talent. If this means nothing to you, fine, but don't be soured if you can't sell anything.
