He was a self-taught photographer who acquired the skills he needed by reading books and talking with other photographers. By 1933, he was a earning his living as a photographer. Beginning in 1927, Bovis often photographed Paris at night. He loved fairs and circuses, and published a book about them in 1948, called Fêtes foraines. Bovis was the author or co-author of a number of other books on topics including photography, Algeria, and the theaters, museums, and architecture of Paris. He worked on many private and public commissions for clients including Leica and Lancôme.
