Harro Maass (Born in 1939) was born on the North Sea Island of Wangerrooge. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Kerkkunstschule Krefeld. After his graduation in 1962, he became an art director and a graphic designer. About 12 years later, he became a freelance illustrator. In 1987, he began painting wildlife, traveling to the rainforests of East Africa, Ecuador, Cost Rica, North America, and the Galapagos Islands, and exhibiting internationally. His style is naturalistic and he uses acrylic and gouache. Mass is a wildlife artist, bird painter, nature painter, nature illustrator, graphic artist, and animal painter. He’s a frontier between painting, illustration and graphic, between imaginative interpretation and detailed documentation, between surrealism and realism. He’s a lover and admirer, but at the same time, a critical reproach in nature. In addition to craftsmanship and artistic, he is characterized by a special understanding of nature, which he acquired in his youth and later developed in many directions.

As a pupil, Maass often traveled with the birdwatchers in the protected areas. It is during such travels that his first deeper impressions of biological connections were coined. Since 1974 he has worked as a freelance illustrator and in 1987 he started painting wildlife. Articles about him can be found in Wildlife Art Magazine and US Art. Maass depicts wildlife from those parts of the world he as himself visited. He has held three solo shows in Germany and exhibited in museums, galleries and other shows both in the United States and Europe. His art is in the collection of Museum Alexander Koenig and Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum.
