John Atwater (Born in 1954) captures the beauty and life of coastal landscapes drawing on the subtlety of light and atmosphere of Luminist schools and the Hudson River. Since 1980 he has spent a number of weeks each summer driving and sailing along the Maine coastline, from Camden to Boothbay Harbor, gathering research material for his works of art, which he completes in his studio in Connecticut. He’s a member of the American Society of Marine Artists, the American Watercolor Society, and he’s the president of the Connecticut Watercolor Society. From 1985 to 1989, he received several awards from his American Watercolor Society Exhibitions. His work is displayed in the permanent collection of the Mystic Seaport Museum. Atwater is a graduate of the Washington University School of Fine Arts in St. Louis, Missouri. After his graduation, he worked as a commercial artist for 8 years before he devoted himself to painting full time.

Articles on his work have also appeared in Connecticut, American Artist, Yankee, and Sailing and Motor Boating magazines. His art has been the focus of discussion among many professional artists and students. Over the years, the artist has traveled the globe — and he cant leave his camera behind - a Minolta camera which he was given by his father. Atwater has shared his favorite photos from very far places. He has also displayed them on handmade frames that TV anchors makes from salvaged antique parts. Those who purchase his art do so because they are inspiring as well as attractive.
