Michael Sowa, born in 1945, is a renowned German painter and illustrator whose artistic expressions are either whimsical or surrealistic. He grew up in Berlin area, the capital city of Germany. His great works mainly capture animals such as pigs, sheep, and more. Sowa is a former student of the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin where he studied illustration and painting. He received his arts degree in 1975 after spending seven years at the academy. He then took a brief stint as an art teacher, a period within which he inspired several young people into whimsical art. Since then, he has remained focused on his career as a painter and illustrator. Sowa boasts of a book containing 50 of his paintings under the name Sowa's Ark: An Enchanted Bestiary.

He is also reputed for having illustrated several books, including Esterhazy, The Rabbit Prince, The Little King December, and Esterhazy. Eine Hasengeschichte. Sowa rarely used animals in his paintings, but when he did, he would do so with a little touch of humor. He did most of his paintings on simple backgrounds, clearly projecting the subject of every piece. His work for the film Amelie became one of his most acclaimed paintings. He painted the set in a manner that brought the walls to life, something that won several awards. Although the awards weren’t for him as an individual, he managed to get a lot of followers as a result. Sowa’s works have been reproduced and are being exhibited in different locations globally.
