Herb Scharfman (1912 – 1998) was an American photographer who was known for his famous photographs of the sports people from America published by Sports Illustrated and other publications. A native of Chicago, Scharfman began his career in New York as a stringer for International News Photo. He did a great job and within a short time he was regarded as one of the best photographers in New York. His 1952 photograph showing Rocky Marciano's knockout punch in a bout against Jersey Joe Walcott has been considered by many as one of the most iconic photographs in the photojournalism history. In 1961, Scharfman chronicled Roger Maris during his pursuit of the single-season home run record of Babe Ruth. His photo of that record breaking moment is one of the most famous photos of baseball. Scharfman joined the staff of Sports Illustrated after International News Photo went out of business.

Although his photographs adorned the cover of the magazine 15 times in a 10-year span, Scharfman is best known for a photo in which he appears. The shot was taken in 1964 by Neil Leifer. It shows Muhammad Ali standing over a fallen Sonny Liston in their rematch of 1964. Scharfman can be seen directly across the ring from Leifer. He appears between the legs of Muhammad Ali in the iconic image. The photo has caused a lot of excitement since it was taken and Lefier later commented that on that night, Scharfman was in the wrong seat though he was one of the greats. Scharfman has many photographs to his name, some of which have found their way into many prestigious galleries all over the world.
