Michael Clark grew up on the western coast of Scotland. "Like most children I was always drawing," Michael recalls. "I can still remember the disappointment when we were not allowed to paint because one child in my class was always knocking over his water jar!" After graduating from the Edinburgh College of Art, Michael found himself creating computer graphics for the BBC in Glasgow. When computer graphics became dull and repetitive, he left the field to pursue painting for its own sake. In 1994 he began painting full time and formed an association with a fine art card publishing company. Michael now lives in Scotland with his wife Karen and their children Nia, Madeleine and Angus. Their Georgian house has a beautiful garden and a large studio that have led him to be bolder and more expressive in his paintings. Michael loves good food, wine, gardens and sports, all evidenced by his unusual portrayals of these subjects in his extraordinary watercolor and oil paintings. Travel is extremely important and inspiring to Michael. London is only a short trip away, and Michael goes there to visit friends and exhibitions on a regular basis. Of technique, Michael admits, "I am a messy worker! Working from life, I start with a charcoal drawing. I then use large watercolor brushes, often on a wet surface, which keeps the painting lively and fresh." His oil painting shows a love of paint and is also very vigorous. Sally Hunter, owner of The Sally Hunter Gallery in London where Michael has had two solo exhibits, says, "The heady scents and ravishing colors [in Michael's work] engender a mood which is contagious. His paintings transmit a very direct sense of pleasure which hits home without apology."
