Italian artist Giorgio Morandi is best known for his elegant still lifes of bottles and vases painted in muted palettes. Morandi was born in Bologna, Italy, where he lived most of his life. After spending a year working in his father's export business, Morandi studied art at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Bologna. He then became an art teacher in the Bolognese elementary schools while pursuing his art on his own time. Influenced by the Metaphysical art of Giorgio de Chirico and Carlo Carra, Morandi began to explore the metaphysics of ordinary objects. By his thirties he was already deeply absorbed in the aesthetic exploration of a limited range of objects that he arranged and rearranged into sophisticated still lifes. In 1930 Morandi became a professor of engraving at the academy where he had been trained, a position he held for 26 years. In 1948 Morandi won the first prize for Italian painting at the Venice Biennial and membership in the Accademia di San Luca. He won the top prize for international painting at the Sao Paolo Biennial in Brazil in 1957.
