Every up-and-coming artist needs a break, but when Reuben Colley took a handful of his oil paintings into work to show his colleagues, he could not have dreamed that it would mark the start of a meteoric rise to nationwide recognition.
Birmingham, England born artist Reuben, then 23, was making ends meet by working in the framing workshop of the Halcyon Gallery, having completed a BA (Hons) in Fine Art at the University of Wolverhampton the year before. A colleague picked the paintings up and took them to show Glyn Washington at fine art publishers Washington Green. Glyn bought 20 paintings then and there-the rest, as they say, is history.
2001 proved to be a landmark year for Reuben, staging his first one man show, which was a sell-out, as well as receiving the prestigious 'Up and Coming Published Artist of the Year' award from the Fine Art Trade Guild. Turning his attention to capturing the capital on canvas during 2002, Reuben has sealed his reputation as one of the contemporary art world's brightest new talents, with sell out exhibitions in Birmingham and London, and his work was chosen to be featured in the front windows of Harrod's, London's leading department store.
"London is at the feet of 26 year old artist Reuben Colley-and firmly placed on his easel."
Harrod's Omnia Magazine
"With his impressionistic work bringing alive people and buildings in the city, his paintings have been compared to Monet, Lowry and Hopper."
Birmingham Evening Mail
"Birmingham artist Reuben Colley is a hot new name on the contemporary art scene and has discovered that London's streets really are paved with gold."

"One of the most exciting young talents around-a real painter's painter"
