Howard Hodgkin was born in London and studied at the Camberwell School of Art in London and at the Bath Academy of Art in Corsham. Hodgkin's paintings, which are usually fairly small, sometimes look completely abstract, but in fact they are based on specific events-memories of people and places-primarily social gatherings. He has described them as "representational pictures of emotional situations." Hodgkin has traveled widely, making several trips to India, and his preference for flat color and decorative borders reflects his admiration for Indian miniatures. He paints onto chunky wooden supports; every inch of the picture surface is loaded with paint, including the frame. He is regarded as one of the outstanding colorists in contemporary painting. A well-known figure in the art world, he has been a trustee of the Tate Gallery and the National Gallery in London, and in 1985 he was the second recipient of the Turner Prize, awarded annually to an outstanding British artist. His work is well-represented in the Tate Gallery.
