Alonzo Saunders is an artist who uses his talent and eye for color to create charming decorative pieces as well as stunning female portraits. He’s a multi-media artist who paints on canvas using a variety of media including pastel, oil, fabric, and acrylic. He’s noted for his distinctive versatility and style, and his eclectic work reveals his spiritual depth and his sensitive nature. He has been working as an artist for several years and his art is easily recognizable because he has developed a unique style. Saunders feels that the artistic expression and freedom of the African-American soul are portrayed in his creations. He expresses his feelings about his subjects using his art. The artist has participated in many private and public national shows sponsored by the collectors of his work. L. Douglas Wilder, former Governor of Virginia, received the original painting by Saunders entitled “Graduate -The Educated Black Man.” This really helped to promote his work.
His other original piece entitled “My Beloved Son,” was commissioned by an historical African-American church in Norfolk, VA called The Basilica of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception. His art gained much popularity and he has a very wide client base. “Black Freedom,” his most recent print was selected to decorate the set on the TV series which can be seen on FOX "The Bernie Mac Show". One Hundred Black Men of America, Inc. selected Saunders as a recipient of the Men of Distinction Star Awards for his outstanding work. His art is admired by many, particularly art students and teachers.
