Studio Voltaire was founded by Aaron Angell (born 1987), an artist who was born in Kent, Britain, and is currently working and living in London. Studio Voltaire exists to create a space for experimentation, thinking and reflection, and to support artistic practices. It is a leading independent contemporary arts organisation whose main activities are the provision of a renowned programme of exhibitions, affordable studios, commissions and performances, and a pioneering education programme. This string of activities provides a special synergy and environment for the dissemination, display and production of contemporary art. Through these contingent parts, Studio Voltaire provides multiple entry-points for audiences through various programming practices that foster critical engagement with contemporary culture. The experts at the studio place the artist at the centre of everything they do: providing opportunities to produce work in a discursive and an open environment and allowing a closer relationship between the artist, the audience and the production of work.

The studio presents a new large-scale commission of painting and sculpture by Aaron Angell. The artist hopes to encourage new ways of thinking about the culturally nuanced history of ceramics. He is interested in marginal forms of image-making and focuses on ceramics as a vehicle for sculpture. Angell produces sculptural tableaux that reference naturalistic forms, hobbyist cultures, and the underground ceramics of Britain that were hand-built from the 1970s to the 1980s. Angell is also the director and founder of Troy Town Art Pottery that’s hosted by Open School East. He founded this in response to dwindling ceramics access in London. The artist is represented by Rob Tufnell, London.
