Tom Ryan (Born in 1922) was born in Springfield, Ill. He was born to Sarah Helen Behrens and William Martin Ryan. His father’s family emigrated from Ireland to Illinois in the 1880s. He began to draw even before he went to school. He was 4 years old and he liked to draw airplanes with the help of his older brother. He considered those to be his first art lessons. Ryan did not decide to be an artist until after his service in Second World War. While in the United States Navy during the war, he used to draw portraits of his shipmates and other servicemen and "made quite a bit of money". In 1945, after being discharged, he picked up a Life magazine with an article about N.C. Wyeth. Ryan said that he read the article, and he liked what he read, and he loved the pictures reproduced from his paintings in the article.

That’s when he decided to be an artist. After his graduation from the American Academy of Art, he returned to Springfield where he married Harvey Jacqueline, who was the daughter of a local doctor. Unfortunately his wife died in 1998. So Ryan and his family moved to New York City where he joined the Art Students League to continue with his studies. In the late 1950s Ryan began making trips west. He would stay 3 or 4 months sketching, painting and photographing scenes he would later need. At that time, his works centered on historical places and events. Ryan won numerous awards for his outstanding works.
