Arguably one of Vincent Van Gogh’s most famous paintings, “Sunflowers, 1888” was painted for Gauguin’s guest room in Van Gogh’s yellow house in Arles, France. Part of his second series of sunflowers, Van Gogh hoped to decorate the entire room in a “symphony in blue and yellow” (written in a letter to his brother, Theo in August of 1888). Including 14 dying sunflowers in a vase, Van Gogh’s impressionist painting of vibrant sunflower is perhaps Van Gogh’s most recognized masterpiece. For those who love art history or Van Gogh’s impressionist style, “Sunflowers, 1888” is a perfect match.
