More concerned with coloristic effects than with "correctly" drawn perspectives, Cezanne placed the objects of his still-life with great care according to their color values in the picture. Set against a light-blue wall, the flowers, fruit, and vase exhibit intense hues of green, red, white, and dark blue. The outlines of the vase have been repeatedly drawn in fine blue, white, and red strokes of paint, thus creating a three-dimensional effect, an aspect which excited the Cubists.
