"As a portrait, a decorative pattern, or a piece of well-engineered impressionistic painting it tops everything in the Academy. R.A.M. Stevenson thus identified the three elements of Stargent's portrait of Lady Agnew of Lochnaw that determined its success at the Royal Academy i n1893. The subtle tonal modeling and brilliant handling of light complement the refined, aerial quality of the colour harmonies -,opalescent white gown, lilac sash, floral covered bergere and turquoise slk - and the broad, brushy handling of paint. It is a beguiling imae: her direct gaze commands our attention and the ironic half-smile hints at the possession of some secret.
