Emily Weil works and lives in Temescal, Oakland. She holds a bachelor of fine arts degree in Graphic Design from California College of Art & Design. She went ahead to study watercolor under artist Leigh Hyams. Emily currently owns the Red Eye Design In her pieces, her goal is to “go deep” and she enjoys inhabiting “The Zone” which she describes as the inner creative space that usually expresses itself without thinking about it. She says that for the paper pieces, she started with pencil, and referring to a photo she’s taken. From there she dived into the watercolors palette and finally worked into the painting with a graphite crayon, charcoal and sometimes pastel. Occasionally she works in a few spoons of dirt. For her abstract paintings, she left working from photos and enjoys seeing what happens if she work from her feelings and gut. This frequently results in a splattering of raw emotion on paper.

Emily feels privileged to travel to a wonderful land where there’s no time — where it’s only her, canvas or watercolor paper and the media. It’s a satisfying place to visit, and she often leaves happy, tired and drained — except when she feels furious, frustrated and like an artist who has failed and who has no business doing such things. She has exhibited at many locations including Pro Arts East Bay Open Studios, Jco’s Place gallery, James Snidle Fine Arts & Appraisals, Joyce Gordon Gallery, Oakland, Bridgehead Studios, Alameda, Firehouse Gallery North, Berkeley, Nomad Cafe, Oakland, among others.
