Andy Warhol Makes the Common Everyday Bigger Than Life

by Fulcrum Gallery Staff 11. February 2013 10:19

You've got to love him.

Andy Warhol is probably one of the most influential artist of all time, and certainly the most notable Pop Artist, a real modern master.

Warhol's penchant for taking everyday props and putting a spotlight on them turned the ordinary extraordinary and memorable because, for him, those little bits of ordinary truly reflected the culture he lived in; they showcased the daily goings on of the regular people, the popular culture; hence: the art of popular culture or Pop Art.

Of course, he's a legend.  His works are iconic.

Campbell's Soup 1968

Warhol is the guy who painted the picture of a big, red Campbell Soup can.  He's also the guy who painted comic-colored portraits of Marilyn Monroe and made many larger-than-life celebrities even more... larger-than-life.

Ten Marilyns 1967

Warhol liked to paint people in the news, the people on the front page replete with pictures and headlines, and he liked to paint people who held a newspaper in their hands, as well as those reading a paper, too.

His style made them pop, and those portraits have been replicated and donned and admired on walls everywhere.  In short, Andy Warhol immortalized the people and things whose images he captured - vividly.

And today Pop Art is still popular.  It’s popular because it inspires a memory, an experience, a feeling for the person viewing it.

According to Warhol:

"Once you ‘got’ Pop, you could never see a sign the same way again. And once you thought Pop, you could never see America the same way again."

And, that says it all. Take a look. You'll see.

Bring Light and Sunshine In, Through the Paintings of Claude Monet

by Fulcrum Gallery Staff 29. January 2013 10:27

Water Lilies Morning

Bring sunshine into your home with Claude Monet's clear, airy paintings of natural subjects.

Nature, and the clear beauty that changes in sunlight bring to everyday scenes, are main elements in Monet’s unique style. “I am following Nature without being able to grasp her…I perhaps owe having become a painter to flowers,” he once wrote. His fascination with capturing sunlight’s nuances led him to found the Impressionist art movement, which takes its name from his painting, Impression, Sunrise

On a visit to the Louvre as a young painter, Monet saw other art students faithfully copying the Old Masters. Instead of joining their ranks, he set his art supplies up by a window and tried to capture what he saw outside.

“For me, a landscape does not exist in its own right, since its appearance changes at every moment; but the surrounding atmosphere brings it to life--the light and the air which vary continually. For me, it is only the surrounding atmosphere which gives subjects their true value.”

Monet's deep understanding of natural light channels a feeling of sunshine through his images, transforming even a windowless room. In his painting, Madame Monet and Her Son, the warmth of the sunshine beaming down on the lady’s parasol, and the love he felt for his wife and child, transcend the canvas.

Many of his paintings pull the viewer into a natural landscape, using paths and other metaphors to create this illusion. In Garden at Giverny, leaves’ shadows dapple a path through a sunny garden, and entice the viewer into a mid-morning stroll through flowers, trees, and his or her own imagination. The painting Beach at Trouville uses a boardwalk to invite the viewer in, this time for a seaside promenade and a lingering feeling of being on holiday.

As in the previous painting, the play of light on water fascinated Monet, and his many works featuring ponds, lakes, rivers and the sea illustrate this career-long interest. Antibes, showing a lone, wind-bent tree on the shore, is at once charming and melancholy.  Water Lily Pond, on the other hand, is as full of cheer as it is of color. Cliff Walk at Pourville, on the other hand, is a postcard from another time, a snapshot of a sunny day along the coast.

Kitchen Art That Enlivens The Heart Of The Home

by Fulcrum Gallery Staff 7. December 2012 10:20

Fruit of the Harvest

Our kitchens are often the gathering places for our families where we can nourish our bodies and enrich our souls.  The time spent cooking together, in lively conversation around the table and even in cleaning up is an example of the quality time that we try so hard to find in our hectic lives.

We want to create a warm and inviting atmosphere and the addition of artwork is an excellent place to build that foundation.  There are a few different kitchen art styles that you might consider depending on your current decorating theme.

  • The Cottage Kitchen

The light colors and clean, uncluttered feeling will immediately make you feel at home.  It is reminiscent of a quieter time when the accumulation of things was not a priority.  A cottage kitchen is simple and basic and artwork of a beach scene will fit perfectly with this style.

  • The Modern Kitchen

In the modern design the photograph can add depth and character to our kitchens  Photos of kitchen utensils or even abstract art of food and drinkcan create an interesting focal point that will draw the eye.

  • The Classic Country Kitchen

This is a very popular theme today which creates that warm and inviting atmosphere we seek.  The country kitchen brings to mind warm soup bubbling on the stove and baskets of fruit on the counter.  This theme lends itself particularly well to images of farms and farm animals as well as the primitive art style.

  • The Asian Kitchen

The type of art that this kitchen will highlight includes images of natural beauty like cherry blossoms and seashells and the iconic asian influence in their zen-like outdoor spaces.  It is in this kitchen that you will find a place of peace and stillness.

Our kitchen art is an extension of our desire to provide a place were we can come together as family and with friends and feel a sense of warmth and comfort. No matter what theme speaks to you there is artwork that will deepen the experience and help bring it to life.

Spark Your Own Creativity Through the Works of Salvador Dali

by Fulcrum Gallery Staff 29. November 2012 10:07

Artwork in your home or office is a great mood setter. It can soothe, enliven, brighten and subdue. And, it can inspire.

If you're looking to some of history's great artistic minds to help you find your own creative spark, you may consider browsing through Salvador Dali's paintings.

Meditative Rose

Dali (1904-1989) was a surrealist painter and one of the last century's greatest creatives. Not only was he a lauded and prolific painter, but he aimed to plumb the depths of the human mind--ananalogy he took so far as to show up at an art function wearing a deep-sea diver's costume, which almost suffocated him.

His artwork, and his eccentric dress and lifestyle, were all a result of his unfettered creativity. Dali sought not only to create great things, but to be recognized for his creations.  “Intelligence without ambition is a bird without wings,” he once said.

While the recipe for his own je-ne-sais-quoi was notoriously secret (another quote: “The secret to my influence has always been that it remained secret.”), he did let on about his creative method. He called it “paranoiac-critical activity,” and it basically consisted of him letting his mind meander while he meditated.

Consider what is probably his most famous painting, The Persistence of Memory. The barren landscape, the melting watches--let your mind wander through it--doesn’t it spark something in you?  Meditative Rose is another of Dali’s great images to ponder. A floating flower, above a desert plain. Does this speak of the human condition? Our potentials and possibilities?

Persistence of Memory

For others, Dream Caused by the Flight of a Bee Around a Pomegranate, A Second Before Awakening, despite having one of the longest titles of famous artwork, is the best place to start their own meditation. Sleep, Mirage, Geopoliticus Child Watching the Birth of the New Man--all of these paintings offer a wealth of images to help your own brain go "outside the box."

Browse through some of the works by Dali on our website, and find something to spark your own creativity. As Dali himself said, "those who do not want to imitate anything, produce nothing."

Pop Art Will Open Your Eyes And Free You To Explore The Possibilities

by Fulcrum Gallery Staff 23. October 2012 09:55

Three Flags

A popular decorating theme these days takes us back to the age of flower power and free love.  The pop culture of the 60s always brings back memories of a simpler time in our history.  We wanted nothing more than peace, love and rock and roll music.  Today our children have found the same delight that we did with shaggy area rugs, beaded door curtains and Papisan Chairs.

The art of this time was eye-catching and bold with the style of artist Andy Warhol being one of the most popular.  We also decorated our walls with life-sized comic strips, in the style of Roy Lichtenstein and giant cans of tomato soup.  The iconic peace sign was plastered everywhere we looked including our living room wall.

Peace

This time in our recent past was full of optimism and hope as we saw great promise in our future.  We took a man to the moon and a generation of young girls fell madly in love with the Beatles.  Music played a big part in our lives and we saw an explosion of musical talent that we would often remember in pieces of art.

The artists of that time made great strides forward and took much pleasure in rocking the art establishment back on it's heels.  Some traditionalists simply could not understand how text on canvas could be considered art.  But we knew the power of those words and how they motivated us to be the best that we could be. It was also a time in our history when art sometimes told stories of sorrow and pain.

The Pop Art period was one of stretching boundaries and joyful experimentation.  We expressed ourselves on paper, canvas and even spray-painted on walls.  This was a time when rules did not apply.

Tips to Care for Your Bathroom Art

by Fulcrum Gallery Staff 14. September 2012 15:52

Bubble Beads Linens Citrus Sorbet

Bathroom art may require some specialized care according to the features of the bathroom in which it is hung. Light, humidity and heat all effect paper and thus artwork. Knowing how to counter these problems will help ensure your artwork remains undamaged over time.

Light

Often bathrooms do not have much of a problem with direct light falling on the artwork. Windows are usually covered or frosted for privacy. Most people are aware that direct sunlight fades colors, but many are not aware that artificial light can have the same effect. Very bright lights in the bathroom will damage artwork over time.

If your bathroom does get direct sunlight be sure to cover the windows during the day. Another option is to hang art where the sun will not be able to hit it directly. Check the bathroom throughout the day with the window uncovered to ensure you understand everywhere the sun hits. Avoid hanging art where direct sublight falls when possible.

Humidity

Humidity can damage prints quickly and of course any bathroom with a shower or tub in it will be prone to humidity. Help reduce the damage from frequent humidity by running a fan whenever someone is using hot water. This will vent the steam as quickly as possible and keep the paper from absorbing very much. Paper that absorbs humidity is prone to developing mold. Framing a print behind glass can also help reduce the damage from humidity as this protects and seals the art. Be sure to keep some space between the art and the glass when any artwork is framed, no matter what room it will be in.

Humidity is not as much of a problem if the bathroom does not have a tub or shower. It is still important to monitor the humidity in the house overall to ensure it stays above 40 percent to avoid drying the paper out. People who live in very arid conditions may actually need to add humidity to the air.

Heat

The temperature in the bathroom tends to fluctuate as it is used. Often a bathroom has no windows and is the warmest room in the home. Heat can combine with humidity to cause damage to artwork. It is important to try and avoid large fluctuations in temperature. Don't place artwork directly over a heating vent to help avoid heat damage.

Keeping bathroom art undamaged over time is simple when proper precautions are taken to avoid light, heat and humidity.
