Martin Shire

Martin Shire is an artist who was born in Waltham, Quebec and studied at Sheridan College in Oakville, Ontario. Before becoming an artist, Martin worked in different hotels, and he became an assistant manager of the Ascot Inn in Toronto. Although he thought he couldn't make a living out of it, Martin knew he wanted to be an artist in high school. His career in the arts started when he did editorial cartooning for local papers and he got to do layout as well. Aside from art, Martin is also a musician, he plays keyboard, and composes his own music. Picasso, Braque, Matisse and other art that uses powerful shapes and colors are inspiration to Martin.

What are three ways to use a pencil other than drawing or writing?

Stirring paint, use as a shoe horn, kindling for camp fire.

Have you always worked independently or with a team since the start of your career in the arts?

With different design firms, then freelancing. Lots of real estate advertising, then websites, then onto illustration, painting and fine art.

How would you describe the style of the art you create?

Fast, loose and fun.

What mediums do you use for your art?

Pencils, acrylic paint, some oils also.

What do you feel is your greatest strength in your art?

Colour, drawing, creating new imagery.

Where do you see yourself as an artist within the next 10 years?

Hopefully in a bigger studio with lots of light. Maybe a view of the ocean.

How do you know when a piece you're working on is done?

I leave it alone and when I come back and it checks out, I'll leave it as is.

What is your biggest advice for aspiring and uprising artists?

Build a consistent style and go with it.

What is one thing about you that most people don't know?

I'm bilingual, jog almost every day and don't own any ties.

If you were a new addition to the crayon box, what would your color name be and why?

Flourescent lime, to give the colours more punch.

What is your favorite saying or quote?

We have nothing to fear but fear itself.
