Rolf Cavael was born in Konigsberg, Germany. He studied typography, painting, and music at the Stadel School in Frankfurt, Germany, beginning in 1924. Cavael first worked in the film industry as an advertising graphic artist, and he taught applied graphic arts. After his first painting exhibit in 1933 - one he shared with artist Josef Albers - the German National Socialists prohibited Cavael from painting. Cavael had his first post-World War II exhibition in 1949. Cavael was a strong proponent of abstract art. Together with a number of other German artists he founded the group ZEN 49 in Munich, Germany, under the patronage of artist Willi Baumeister. Cavael was fascinated by microbiology, and his "floating forms" of the early 1950s seem to echo the forms of microscopic cells. The precise and tranquil art of this phase of Cavael's career gave way to his dynamic works of the 1960s and 1970s that showed his strong affinity for music.
