Brigitte Carnochan creates photographic images of flowers that are graceful, lush, and unique. Carnochan first produces her images as gelatin silver prints, then often hand-colors them. The hand-coloring process allows her, she says, "to interpret the essence of my subject according to my own imagination." Carnochan also photographs evocative still lifes, nudes, landscapes, and documentary photos. Carnochan was educated at San Jose State University in San Jose, California (B.A., English), at Stanford University in Stanford, California (M.A., Education), and at the University of California at Berkeley (Ph. D., English). As Carnochan says, "First in literature and now in photography, I have been interested in the power of the imagination - how it colors everyday life - creates, in fact, private views of experience, whether revealed in words or in images." Carnochan's work has been exhibited in one-person shows at the Albuquerque Museum of Art in New Mexico, Modernbook/Gallery 494 in Palo Alto, California, and the Granary Gallery on Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, among others. She has also participated in a number of group exhibitions and has taught at various institutions, including Stanford University and the University of California at Santa Cruz.
