Cornell Capa Art Prints

Cornell Capa was born Cornell Friedmann in Budapest, Hungary. He moved to Paris in 1936, joining his brother Andre Friedmann, who as Robert Capa would become a well-known photojournalist. Cornell Capa first worked as his brother's printer before moving to New York City in 1937 to join the Pix photo agency. His first photo-story, on the New York World Fair, was published in Picture Post in 1938. Capa served in the U.S. Air Force before becoming a Life photographer in 1946. He worked at Life until his brother Robert's untimely death in 1954. Capa then joined Magnum, the photo organization his brother had co-founded, to help sustain it. Capa has published three books, including one on indigenous cultures in 1964 and one on mental retardation in 1957. For many years, Capa has dedicated most of his time to hosting his brother Robert's archives and to working with the International Center of Photography in New York City, which Cornell Capa founded and first directed. Capa has won many awards, including the Honor Award from the American Society of Magazine Photographers (1975) and a Lifetime Achievement Award in Photography from the Aperture Foundation (1999).
