Janet Bothne was born in Dedham, Massachusetts. She studied at the University of MA, and in several other institutions of higher learning. Once a gallery owner wrote that she was “having a love affair with paint.” This is because she spent so many days immersed in paint— under her nails, on her skin, on her clothes. Years go by as she watches other artists jump happily from one discipline to another but she’s still infected, still entranced. She’s not having an affair—paint is her true love. Working with saturated color is her relaxer. As the paint on her palette changes depending on humidity, time, temperature or other environmental factors, she gets a sense that it’s alive. Janet’s goal is to transfer that life onto the canvases she creates.

She puts aside what she thinks she knows and allows herself to become a conduit for this ancient primal force, taming intense color is a limited proposition. Unease leads to awe as she relinquishes control and tap into the pulse of color, vibrating musicality and speed–the frustrated musician within her playing notes of pigment with her brushes. Janet has had numerous solo exhibitions including those at UNM Popejoy Hall – Albuquerque, Bank Of America Building – Albuquerque, Back Street Bistro – Santa Fe, Palette Contemporary Gallery – Albuquerque, Petrossian Boutique – W. Hollywood, Maison Décor Gallery– Provincetown, Art Expo –Miami, FL, UBM Canon – Santa Monica, among others. She has also participated in group exhibitions with much success. Her art is in many buildings all over the world.
