Nancy Davidson’s father hoped she would become an architect and work with him and her grandfather in Peter Davidson & Sons General Contractors, the family business. They built many estates in Montecito and Hope Ranch, as well as public administration buildings, churches, and schools throughout Santa Barbara. Although Nancy loved the smell of fresh wood and construction, she loved more the smell of turpentine and fresh oil paints. She was inevitably drawn to fine art. Her interest in drawing and painting was sparked by a collection of etchings by artist Borein Edward. She was also enthralled with his images of horses, early California vaqueros, ranch life and cattle. With paper and pencil she’d spend entire afternoons making copies and offering them to her grandfather for his exacting but gentle critiques.

That’s how her art training began, before he even started elementary school. Her art education continued at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Santa Barbara City College, and UC Santa Barbara. Another influence on her art was her job at Santa Barbara City College, where she worked in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences as the Geologic Illustrator in the early 1980s. Here, she gained respect for the forces that built the underlying structure of the local landscape and gained an appreciation for it. Like her father and her grandfather, the structure is important to her. No matter what she’s painting, her subject is always light. She likes her compositions to be rock-solid. One of her good friends and favorite teacher and was Robert Frame.
