Helen Shulman (born 1941) is an abstract painter whose immediacy with the natural environment is reflected in her resonant oil and mixed media paintings. She earned her MSW from Simmons College in Boston and an MA in Mathematics from the University of California, Riverside. Her focus turned to painting full time in 1989 with extensive studio studies at the Art Institute of Boston, Boston’s School of the Museum of Fine Arts, and Massachusetts College of Art. Her painting process begins with an under-painting, she then gradually builds upon it with complex layers of color carefully sanded and scraped at various stages to create contrast and depth. The compositions of her paintings suggest strong influences by Richard Diebenkorn’s distinct geometric style and the Hudson River School painters.

Helen’s works have been exhibited at the Eastern Seaboard and throughout New England; it has been featured in Still Point Arts Quarterly, Brunswick, ME and Art New England Magazine. Her work is also included in numerous public and private collections including the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and Dana Farber Cancer Institute, among others. Actually, it really never occurred to her to take a chance on becoming an artist until she had already had a long career as a psychotherapist. Today, her artistic philosophy is related to her experience as a psychotherapist. She witnessed people being able to take advantage of their therapy time over and over again. And they allowed themselves to be removed from external demands and to focus on inner lives. Helen saw how this was refreshing and rejuvenating, how new solutions and directions could arise. That’s the same effect she wants to achieve with her art.
