Photographer Ron Tarver was born in Ft. Gibson, Oklahoma. He received a B.A. in journalism and graphic arts from Northeastern Oklahoma State University. He has been on staff at the Philadelphia Inquirer for many years, earning honors from the Society of Professional Journalists and the National Press Photographers Association/University of Missouri Pictures of the Year competition, among others. He has received a fellowship from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and a grant from the National Geographic Society. In 2001 he was awarded a Pew Fellowship in the Arts, one of the largest fellowships for an individual artist, carrying a $50,000 prize. Tarver's photographs have been exhibited both nationally and internationally and are found in many private, corporate, and museum collections, including the Smithsonian National Museum of American Art in Washington, D.C., and the Philadelphia Museum of Art in Pennsylvania. Corporate collections include Johnson & Johnson and Banana Republic. His photographs are included in two books: Reflections in Black: A History of Black Photographers by Deborah Willis (Norton, 2000) and Committed to the Image: Contemporary Black Photographers, edited by Barbara Head Millstein (Merrell, 2001), both of which accompanied museum exhibits on the same subjects.
