Photographer George Zimbel is perhaps best known for his portraits of Marilyn Monroe taken during the filming of The Seven Year Itch, for his documentary work of the 1950s, and for his political coverage of Senator and later President John F. Kennedy. Born in Woburn, Massachusetts, Zimbel became interested in photography in high school. He moved to New York City where he studied photography at the Photo League and enrolled in Columbia University. While attending Columbia, he sold his first photograph to Life magazine. Zimbel graduated from Columbia in 1951 and then received a scholarship to attend the Alexy Brodevitch workshop at the New School for Social Research in New York. During his career, Zimbel has traveled throughout the U.S., Europe, and Canada working for such publications as the New York Times, Redbook, Saturday Review, and Architectural Forum. His photographs can be found in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the International Center for Photography, both in New York City, and at the Musee du Quebec in Quebec City, among others. Zimbel now lives and works in Montreal.
