Rachel Caldwell is an illustrator based in Philadelphia. Her goal is to achieve a visual effect that’s serene and beautiful with movement and clean lines, and which also contains elements of the dreamlike, surreal, or strange. She wants to create images that take elements from real life, combining them with unanticipated surprises such as replacing the feathers of owls with swashes/ligatures. The artist loves when there’s an opportunity to exaggerate. She’s usually drawn to the complex line work that’s involved in creating exposed muscles, graffiti, or flowing hair. She hopes that her viewer finds a combination of amusement and beauty in her subject matter and concepts. This American artist creates original ink paintings and drawings by hand. More often she deals with surrealistic themes including animals. Rachel loves to explore subject matter spanning across both the light (birds) and dark (skulls).

Rachel has a background in graphic design and holds a bachelor of fine arts degree from Kutztown University in Pennsylvania. She likes to explore surrealistic themes in oils colors that are vivid. She also illustrates intricate contemporary models in a pen and ink drawing technique. Her partial list of clients include Columbia Sportswear, Fender, Drawing North, Girt Skateboards, Paper Darts, House of Blues, Smirnoff Vodka, Society, Threadless, The Kase, Wheatpaste Collective and United States Postal Service. Rachel has exhibited in WWA Gallery, Culver City, AIGA Week, Portland, OR, Infinity Art Gallery, Los Angeles, CA, Exchange LA, Los Angeles, CA, The Tribute Gallery, Portland, OR, AND 19TEN Gallery, Portland, OR.
