Joseph Bradley lives in Greenville but spends summers in Charleston. He’s a contemporary and abstract artist whose work is on display at Atrium Art Gallery. Most of his subject matters center on nature. He begins his paintings on wood panel with graphite, and then adds washes, oil paint, metal-leaf and glazes. This brings out a somewhat decorative and flat effect, yet upon closer look, he works in dimensionality to produce a nice tension. Bradley grew up in South Carolina and took many hunting trips with his father and spent a great deal of time to learn to observe nature. The themes he has chosen seemed to work best with what he was trying to communicate through art. His internship was spent with an art restorer who taught him the process mostly used for frame restoration called metal leafing. Slowly, the product of this process started appearing in his work, and he was very interested in mixed-media painting at the time. He says his style has been a journey, and he doesn’t believe he’ll ever really find his niche because he keeps moving forward. Just recently one of his paintings just made the cover of a book titled “Furniture Makes the Room,” authored by Barb Blair, and published by Chronicle Books. His art and home have also featured on the extremely popular websites. He was super excited about these because it has given people a chance to see his home and how he likes to put art together in a room. When he’s not working, he likes to spend time with family and friends.
