For more than 30 years J.P. Clive has been using computers to create images. He works with the original Quantel Paintbox. Clive turned to fine art in the 1990s, but before then, he worked as a television commercials director and won many national and international awards for his work. He is regarded as a leading innovator in the digital applied arts, where he played a pioneering role in imaging techniques such as photorealistic computer animation and morphing. He has written articles, broadcast and lectured on these subjects for the American Cinematographer Magazine, The British Academy of Film & Television Arts, the London Institute of Contemporary Arts, BBC TV & Radio, and The National Film Theatre. In all the solo and group art exhibitions where he has participated, his artwork has featured prominently. He has an amazing ability to capture the unique beauty, essence as well as the personality of his subjects.
His work is represented by several galleries and is part of many corporate and private collections. His works are in private and public collections in South and North America, Japan and Europe. His 28 x 10 meter exterior mural recently won the Phoenix Arts commission and was shown in the center of Brighton. Clive’s process resembles a horticulturist, in as much as he participates in the arrangement and growth of the work. Like a horticulturist, he encourages these progressions according to his own taste and intuitions. The iteration power of the computer allows him to cultivate the type of progressions that occur in nature – like the stratification of minerals, the growth of organisms, or the development of cloud systems.
