Jack Saylor (Born 1960) is a North Carolina native who received a bachelor’s degree in art from Barton College in Wilson, North Carolina. After his graduation, he moved to Spain where he stayed for some time before moving to Italy where he began his career as an artist. At the same time, he was also working for Sarreid, Ltd., as a product designer. Sarreid, Ltd. is a home furnishings importer based in the United States. Over the next decade, Saylor would travel back and forth between Europe and the United States working alongside other artisans and artists in their old workshops and studios throughout Italy and Spain. During this time, he became very knowledgeable in the practices of old world studio which involved many materials and art forms utilized in the creation of the products he used to design particularly in Florence Italy.
At the same time, he continued to further develop his painting skills and technique. While living in Florence, he came across some of the greatest art ever created, and this afforded him the opportunity to intensely study the art of Northern and Western Europe, specifically the Dutch 17th Century and the Italian Renaissance which remain sources he draws his inspiration from today. His intense appreciation for and concentration on design work when combined with this rich artistic environment and being that the pieces of art were created by master artisans, proved a good foundation for the development and growth of his artwork as a painter of still lifes.
