Edwin Cape (Born 1968) was born in Tucson, Arizona. He lived with his family in southern Arizona until he attended college at Northern Arizona University and received a degree in Fine Arts. Cape worked in Sedona during his summer breaks from college. He worked at a local resort where he was inspired by the red-rock Mountains hiking in the surrounding areas. The natural colors of these mountains were a great inspiration for his art and many of them can still be seen in his paintings today. Cape moved to Portland, Oregon after graduating from college, and stayed there for several years, but he decided to return to Sedona where he felt he was most inspired to paint. Cape paints mostly abstracts in acrylics, using a high gloss finish to bring out the colors and rich texture that make his paintings so popular.

His paintings are not composed of obvious images of Southwest, but he remembers every red rock that he has used to inspire the color and imagery in each of his paintings. The four vortexes of Sedona are also well known - where the unseen lines of the power of the earth allegedly intersect to form an energy field. Cape has tried to capture the motion of this energy in many of his pieces, as the energy bounces off the colors of the rocky landscape. Many people look at his paintings and see one thing or another, but just a few know the truth behind his paintings. Cape believes that that’s how it’s supposed to be. He says that everyone should see what they want to see in a painting, and interpret it the way they want.
