Hope Smith (Born 1879 – Died 1965) was active and lived in Rhode Island, Maine. She’s known for figure, landscape and genre. She was born in Providence, Rhode Island and was a painter of oil and watercolor -noted for urban and rural scenes of Providence; genre and landscape paintings; and late paintings, marine scenes of Maine. Hope studied under Mary Wheeler, of the Wheeler School. She also studied art at Rhode Island School of Design under Woodbury C. H., Ogunquit, ME; Julian Academy, Paris; W. M. Chase, ASL; Academy of the Great Chaumière. Growing up in the country was blissful for her. She was surrounded by gentle rolling hills and the peace and quietness of nature provided her with time to reflect and absorb the beauty that surrounded her. Her artistic talent was natured by her family who encouraged her to pursue a career in the arts.

She left her quiet family life behind and exchanged her country life for the excitement of the city. It was the blending of the country living and the city life that became a catalyst for her artistic direction. While Hope was attending Art School in Eastern Canada, she developed her signature style combining her love of traditional with contemporary elements of design. By enriching contemporary compositions with traditional techniques, the artist’s compositions are both modern and beautiful. She was a member of the Rhode Island Historical Society, the South County Art Association and the Providence Art Club. Her work can be seen at Providence Art Club.
