H.l. Meyer was born in Amsterdam. He was a trained lithographer and an artist who prepared stones for some of the leading illustrators of his time. A good example is C.M. Curtis who provided illustrations for the “Voyage of the Beagle” by Darwin. Apart from sketching and studying birds in museum collections, in the zoo and in the wild, Meyer kept birds and other animals in captivity. Today his art can be seen in several galleries, museums, institution and homes around the world. His art is highly priced by many discerning collectors because they can be used to decorate all spaces and are also inspiring. The artist’s large number of original drawings testifies to his accuracy, care and commitment in preparing his folio “Illustrations”, that can be seen in Montreal in the Blacker-Wood Library in McGill University. His “Illustrations of British Birds” was published over a number of years has been regarded as one of the best illustrated works on Ornithology.
