Painted by Vincent Van Gogh in 1888, “Tournesols” or “Sunflowers” are part of a large series of sunflower van gogh painted during the time he lived with his brother, Theo in Paris from 1886-1888. Originally created as part of his “Decoration for the Yellow House,” Van Gogh hoped to impress his visiting artistic friend, Paul Gaughin, with his paintings and created this one in particular for the guestroom where Gaughin stayed. “Now that I hope to live with Gaughin in a studio of our own,” said Van Gogh, “I want to make decorations for the studio. Nothing but flowers.”

During his sunflower period, Van Gogh created many paintings of sunflowers in various states of life. From withering flowers near death to vibrant ones in full bloom, Van Gogh used newly invented swirling vibrant yellows against burn oranges to create floral still-lifes with vivacity and energy. Today, both are on permanent loan to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. Now, you can enjoy this fine art masterpiece in the comfort of your home with this reproduction. Perfect for art history enthusiasts or gardeners, “Sunflowers in Gold” makes a great addition to a living or dining room.
