Part of an enormous series of “six-footer” canvases painted by John Constable, “The Hay Wain” is one of the most well known English art masterpieces. Originally painted on canvas using oil paint, Constable depicts horses drawing a large cart through the River Stour between Essex and Suffolk. On the left hand side of the painting stands Willy Lott’s Cottage which has been renovated and protected by the National Trust to preserve the exact scene that John Constable painted. Currently hung in London’s National Gallery, the painting was originally part of the summer exhibits at the Royal Academy. A great piece of English history and a serene rural landscape, “The Hay Wain” looks gorgeous in a brown or gold frame in a living room or dining room.
