The Jefferson Memorial is a beautiful neoclassical memorial building located in Washington D.C. It was designed by John Russell Pope, a well-known architect who specialized in classical design, and it was created to honor the memory of founding father Thomas Jefferson. The memorial building was based on the Pantheon in Rome on honor of Jefferson’s love of classical architecture.
The original building is made out of impressive white imperial marble and is complimented by the Tidal Basin and a serene backdrop of cherry trees. Despite its clear classical and renaissance influence this building is actually surprisingly modern and plans to build the memorial didn’t begin until the 1930s. This building was completed in 1943 with the statue of Jefferson arriving in 1947.
