Edward Selkirk artwork

Edward Selkirk

"Whether subconsciously or not your surroundings always have an effect on your work. I believe that being raised in a large city was the biggest influence on my painting style today" says Edward Selkirk. Edward is an artist born in Southern California and relocated to New York City as a preteen. Before becoming an artist, Edward worked at many other artistic jobs. Some included graphic design and managing fine art galleries. Today, Edward spends time between Toronto and New York still creating artwork. He hopes to expand his art skills by trying new art like collage work in the future.

What job did you have before becoming an artist?

I worked in the hospitality world for 4 years, (waiting tables counts as the hospitality world, doesn't it??). I was hoping to be discovered on the job by drawing on napkins, receipts or anything I could get my pen on.

When did you first know that you wanted to be an artist?

The first time I went to the Gugenheim Museum. I just love Frank Lloyd Wright.

When did your career in the arts start?

I suppose that depends on how you define "career". I got extra tips from clients that appreciated the art I'd leave on their napkins or paper table clothes. But my first commission work was while I was in my early 30's.

How did you get a career as an artist?

I submitted some art to a stock site decades ago and got bit by the commercial art bug. I put more and more art work out there to help me perfect my art. I took critique from social media and bettered myself.

What kinds of art styles have you tried?

I have tried it all (painting styles that is). I'd love to do more collage work in the future.

Do you prefer to work independently or with a team?

For commercial work it's always best to work in a team, as long as everybody knows that "it's all about me".

What is your biggest inspiration for art?

My Imagination! Thinking about the endless ways to adapt a subject to paper or on canvas. My friends would laugh at some of the pictures I'd take to inspire me. I should make a book of my inspirations on day.

Aside from art, what are some of your favorite hobbies?

I love to sail and have recently fallen in love with cooking. I think the abstract thought process for cooking is the same as image making.
