She was raised in a musical family and became interested in the arts at an early age. Her major at the University of Michigan School of Architecture and Design was in painting and printmaking. During her college years she was in a work-study program and learned graphic skills and held several positions as a graphic artist. Her beautifully realistic, intricately detailed floral watercolors seem to be illuminated from within.

She approaches ideas and carries them out in an intellectual and methodical way that suits her introspective nature. She derives her inspiration from the things she believes are most important in her life: the tranquility and elegance of domestic life, sensitivity to the environment, and the beauty of nature. Mary feels a desire not only to draw the viewer into her love of these things but also to please the viewer. She has been dabbling in acrylics and pen and ink illustrations. However, after she moved to Minnesota in 1985, she began painting seriously in watercolor. She began experimenting with oils in 1998 and has developed a unique style characterized by delicacy, softness, luminosity, and preoccupation with texture and color. Mary won Best of Show in the 1997 Annual Exhibition and has been an active member of the Southwest Watercolor Society.
