James Bama Wall Art

James Bama (Born in 1926) was born and grew up in the Northeast. Through his detailed portraits of cowboys and Native Americans, Bama has been referred to as an “American Realist.” He enrolled in the Art Students League under the GI Bill. After that he had a 22-year career in commercial art as one of the top illustrators in Manhattan, before dedicating his time to appreciated success in fine art. As a professional, he has earned a name for several facets of his talent. It is a testament to his talent and its enduring influence that his work from those early years continues to be honored in the world of science fiction, illustration and fantasy. Bama freelanced briefly before spending 15 years at Charles E. Cooper Studios and more freelancing followed —at the time, Charles E. Cooper Studios was the country’s top firm of illustrators.

During this period Bama’s activities were highlighted by artwork for the Baseball and Football Halls of Fame, the New York Giants football team, The Saturday Evening Post and the U.S. Air Force. His style is realism. Bama sometimes takes advantage of his medium to use lighting techniques that would not be practical in a photograph taken under ambient light. Bama decided to move to west to Wyoming, where he sold his first Western fine art painting soon after the move. His work is distinctive as it combines modern with traditional realities. He shows the contemporary West preserving its traditional culture in his much-acclaimed studies. His portraits of inhabitants of the mountains and plains capture the true character of the West.
