Peter Turnley is a graduate of the University of Michigan, and the Institut d’Etudes Politiques of Paris. He has received Honorary Doctorate degrees from St. Francis College of Indiana and the New School of Social Research in New York. And for the academic year 2000/2001, he received a Nieman Fellowship from Harvard. He teaches photography workshops on street photography and the photo-essay in Cuba, Paris, Mumbai, New York, Sicily, Venice, and Lisbon. Presently, he lives in both Paris and New York, and has published 6 books of his work: Beijing Spring, French Kiss – A Love Letter to Paris, In Times of War and Peace, Moments of Revolution, McClellan Street and Parisians. He’s renowned for his photography of the realities of the human condition. He has worked in about 100 countries and has witnessed most major stories of international historic and geo-political significance in the last 3 decades. His photographs are published frequently in the world’s most prestigious publications and have been featured on the cover of Newsweek 43 times.

They have also been featured in Stern, Paris Match, Harper’s, LIFE, Geo, The London Sunday Times, National Geographic, Le Figaro, VSD, New Yorker, Le Monde, and DoubleTake. His photographs draw attention of the viewer to the plight of those suffering great injustice or hardships. Turnley also affirms with his vision the many aspects of life that are inspirational, poetic, beautiful and just. He has photographed most of the conflicts in the world in the last decade including the Balkans (Bosnia), the Gulf War, Rwanda, Somalia, Chechnya, South Africa, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Haiti, Afghanistan, Indonesia, and Kosovo.
