Sanyu (Born in 1901) was born in Sichuan China. He was one of the earliest Chinese artists to study in Paris. He traveled to Europe in the early 1920s and settled in Paris to study art. He immediately fell in love with the artistic lifestyle that was very popular at that time. He frequented the cafes of Montparnasse, attended classes at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, exchanged ideas and mingled with other young artists from all over the world who had convened in Paris, and who, just like him, had been inspired by visions of creative expansion. This provided him with a wealth of experience. Unlike his Chinese contemporaries, such as Lin Fengmian and Xu Beihong who returned to China and achieved recognition in the academies of art, Sanyu decided to remain in Paris, where he was deeply committed to continuing the development his artistic talent.

Many people believe that had he returned to China, he would most probably have attained the recognition and fame that eluded him during his entire lifetime. Instead, Sanyu died in obscurity abject and poverty in Paris in 1966. In Paris, Sanyu learned to integrate and fuse elements of traditional Chinese training with aspects of the new modernist trends. He got immersed in the heady environment of the Paris school in the first half of the last century. In the course of his artistic career, he metamorphosed from a young Chinese artist to a mature Chinese modernist, as seen in his art. The intersecting dynamics he expressed and explored resulted in hybridization never seen before, and he can be regarded as one of the pivotal pioneers of Chinese art history in this period.
