Jeffrey Milstein (Born 1944) was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA but is currently living and working in Woodstock, NY. He holds a bachelor of Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley, CA. His spare and almost anatomical photographs display his enthrallment with modern aircrafts as the height of achievements in design and engineering. Using high-res digital camera which he carefully positions at the end of a runway, Milstein captures the planes as they speed past him overhead, photographing vibrant, pristine views that, put together, function as a contemporary typology. His other occupations as private pilot, graphic designer, and architect all contribute to his signature approach to photography that also takes on cultural and political weight in the era beyond 9/11. His work has been widely exhibited, including shows at the Space Museum and Smithsonian National Air, Morgan Lehman Gallery, Bonni Benrubi Gallery, and the Portland Art Museum.

A lifelong fascination with and passion for flight has led him to capture images of aircrafts moments before landing. He uses archival pigment processing and print techniques that remove the aircraft from the background; and he then focuses on design and color to achieve maximum clarity in his images. He takes the photos at the precise moment when the airplane is perpendicular to the frame of the camera. He’s exhibited in Benrubi Gallery, New York, Whiteout, Bau-Xi Gallery, Toronto, Kopeikin Gallery, Kopeikin Gallery, and Foster/White Gallery at Palm Springs, among others. The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum organized a solo exhibition of his work in 2011.
