Arthur Leipzig
Arthur Leipzig Bio Pic Arthur Leipzig was born in Brooklyn, New York. After studying at the Photo League in 1942, he became a staff photographer for the newspaper PM, where he worked for four years. During this time, he completed his first photo essay, on children's street games. He soon became a freelance photojournalist, traveling the world to contribute to such periodicals as the New York Times, Look, and Parade. Edward Steichen encouraged Leipzig to teach, and he did - for 28 years at Long Island University in New York, where he is now Professor Emeritus. Leipzig has had one-man exhibitions at the Howard Greenberg Gallery in New York, the Museum of the City of New York, and the Nassau County Museum of Fine Art in Roslyn Harbor, New York, among others. He has participated in many museum exhibitions, including Edward Steichen's landmark Family of Man exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art in New York (1955) and the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Photography as a Fine Art, held in New York (1961-62). His work is represented in the permanent collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York and The National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., among others. Leipzig lives on Long Island.
