A co-founder of the photo agency, Magnum, Henri Cartier-Bresson is one of the pioneers of photojournalism. He was born into a well-to-do French family that expected him to go into the family business of manufacturing thread. Instead, Cartier-Bresson chose to travel and study painting. In 1932 he bought a new type of camera - a small, lightweight Leica with a fast lens. Deeply influenced by the dynamic photographs of Martin Munkacsi and by Surrealist art, Cartier-Bresson sought to capture the "decisive moment" that would produce the most telling, evocative photograph. Cartier-Bresson's early photographs of Europe's urban poor garnered him his first exhibit in Madrid in 1933. For the next sixty years (except for three spent as a prisoner of war during World War II), Cartier-Bresson worked as a photographer and filmmaker. He has traveled widely, photographing in China, the Soviet Union, Mexico, Cuba, and the United States, among other countries. More recently, he has produced few photographs and returned to painting. Cartier-Bresson's work has been exhibited in many international shows and museum retrospectives. He has been the recipient of innumerable international awards, prizes, and honorary doctorates.
