Ralph Steiner Wall Art

Ralph Steiner (Born in 1899) was born to a lower-class Czech family in Cleveland. Before starting his career in photography, he studied chemical engineering at Dartmouth. In 1921 Steiner began studying Photography at the Clarence H. White School. One of his first jobs was to make for Robert Flaherty some illustrative plates for Nanook of the North. He experimented in making his own films (avant-garde), including Mechanical and H2O Principles. In 1926 he became a founding member of the Film and Photo League after he had met Paul Strand in New York. He taught art and was considered "the most sincere and healthiest artist in the bourgeois cinema and photo. In 1929, he made his first film that captured the abstract patterns generated by waves. Among his other notable works is the Surf and Seaweed which he produced in 1931.

This expands on the concept of his first film where he turns his camera to the shoreline. Steiner joined the faculty of Harry Alan Potamkin Film in 1930.There he met Hurwitz Leo and left the Film and Photo League and joined Nykino. He was inspired by ideas of utilizing film as a means of social action. He is still photographs are notable for their abstraction, odd angles and sometimes peculiar subject matter. His experimental films are central to the literature of avant-garde cinema of early America and his visual style continues to assert itself. His art continues to cause a lot excitement among collectors and art students around the globe.
