Charles Lane was born and grew up in rural Hertfordshire. He was given his first camera when he was 5 years old and was instantly hooked. Ever since he received that camera, photography has been a passion. What excites Lane about photography is its potential to be timeless, and that juxtaposition between the small fraction of a second it can take to record an image that has the ability to evoke any emotion conceivable. He says that that’s why great photography is “Art.” Lane shoots mainly digital now, although he learned on film, and he still utilizes the skills of care and patience that come from using T-Max and Ektar 25. Lane’s inspiration comes from landscape greats such as James Ravilious and Ansel Adams and the insight and beauty of Bill Henson and Rankin.
The artist loves the natural world as a subject because it is so exciting to those with curious minds, and his wish now is to shoot fashion set and portraiture in a world of suspended belief and dreams. Lane likes music a lot and when he’s photographing in the studio he listens to anything sung by women. His favorites are songs by Goldfrap, Gabrielle Aplin, Lana Del Rey and Claire Maguire or Bach. If he’s not photographing he likes to relax by watching films and reading. His favorite book is “The Passage” by Justin Cronin (It just drifts him into another world) and his favorite directors are Tim Burton, Francis Ford Cappola and Guillermo del Toro.
