Chuck Larivey (Born 1941) was born in Buffalo, New York. Though he had some formal training, he’s regarded as self-taught, and his art has continued to evolve during his long career as a professional residential and commercial artist and designer. On March 16, 2009, Larivey returned to oil painting. Early in his career he was interested in the Masters and this interest is evident by his sensitive approach to form, color and light which has also evolved somewhere between impressionism and classical. Larivey’s artwork are typically landscapes done in large scale, and favoring the moon or sun with theatrical atmospheric translucent light effects that merge into the surface of the earth. Many of his paintings are developed from his en Plein air studies and photos that he takes during these sessions.

His favorite plein air subject is the sun in the morning and in the evening - the first and last 15 minutes of the sun. He spent 2009 in the open painting in and around Richmond, basically the James River and its rapids. Larivey is a daily painter who explores the merging of water and light on canvas. He says it’s a fascination that he will spend the rest of his life as an artist pursuing and if his paintings evoke an emotion. Larivey has numerous paintings in commercial and private collections on both West and East Coasts including the U.K. His recent exhibits include Glave/Kocen Gallery, Peninsula Fine Art Center, Rich Timmons Fine Art, Richmond Plein Air - Brazier Gallery, and Richard Stravitz Fine Art Gallery, just to name a few.
