Bassmi Ibrahim (Born in 1941) was born in Cairo. His artistic education began at home with his father, who was a devoted photographer. While at school, his talent was recognized by an art teacher at the age of 14. For the next 7 years, the art teacher instructed him privately on how to feel and think as an artist, and also instructed him in traditional techniques. He went on to study receiving his BA degree in art from Ain Shams University in 1963. He attended four years of non-credit studies at the College of Fine Art. The curriculum at the college focused on making art in styles that were older, ranging from Impressionist to classical, but Ibrahim was deeply attracted to modern painting, and that’s what eventually his lifelong preoccupation became. One early morning in 1965, awakening with his mind open and clear, the artist realized a need to paint from his inner self. The result was amazing; what followed was an outburst of one-hundred-and-fifty small ink wash images, connecting the subconscious and. the observable.

This approach would prove basic to Ibrahim’s art. He referred to the approach as painting from his gut and not his mind. The artist moved to New York in the mid-1960s, and immersed himself in the world of abstract art. While in New York, Ibrahim encountered in person Mark Rothko in Greenwich Village. Mark was one of his artistic influences. Other important influences include Pollock and de Kooning, the Abstract Expressionists, and Helen Frankenthaler and Paul Jenkins, both the Color Field painters. During this period, Ibrahim showed his abstract paintings in New York.
