Tamar Zinn is a visual artist based in New York. Her work is included in numerous private and public collections across the US. Her work has appeared in group exhibitions, including several at No Chromophobia, at OK Harris, NYC and The Painting Center in NYC. In 2013, a solo exhibit of her paintings, “Still/Dancing” was presented at Kathryn Markel Fine Arts in New York. Her Broadway series is an exploration of spatial relationships and color that she articulates through the lens of geometric abstraction. Her process of painting is reflective and leisurely, but she doesn’t rely on a set of rules or a system to develop each painting. She integrates sensory experiences often associated with music and dance into the visual elements. She’s particularly interested in conversations between calmness and activity, and along with finding rhythm in the forms in her desire to provide a space for contemplation.

In her art, forms are loosely painted in, perhaps eliminated or adjusted, only to re-emerge in later stages of the work. At any particular moment, whether she’s working within the landscape, line, or vocabulary of geometry, she’s viewed the field as a setting for quiet drama. For her there’s no pre-conceived endpoint in either palette or composition. In some of her work, a more tonal palette may mean she’s decided to develop a meditative space, in another painting, a more spirited palette may reflect her response to a piece of music. Although her paintings are structured with definitive color blocks, it is her intention to put the blocks in play and diminish that sense of certainty.
